This is the Marquis Alfonso Corti (1822-1888), an Italian nobleman, histologist, and anatomist.

In Italian, the word "corti"means "short," but no record exists to indicate whether the late Marquis was shorter than usual in any respect. If he were, perhaps his nickname was "Shorty Corti"?
