As is the case with other craniospinal ganglia, the cell bodies in it are structurally classified as pseudounipolar in structure and sensory in nature. The spiral ganglion is a craniospinal ganglion by virtue of its being located on the VIIIth cranial nerve, the vestibulocochlear nerve. The afferent fibers from these pseudounipolar neurons make up the cochlear branch of the nerve. Additional fibers in the nerve come from the neurons serving the vestibular apparatus; hence the name "vestibulocochlear" makes sense. The older name for this cranial nerve—the "acoustic" nerve—imperfectly reflected its dual function.
