Friedrich S. Schlemm (1795-1858), a German anatomist and Professor at the University of Berlin. He is remembered chiefly for this structure. For reasons not fully understood, the sound of this poor man's name is comical to the ears of native speakers of English; a peculiar way to achieve a sort of immortality.
In this picture he appears to have amblyopia in his right eye. maybe that's why he decided to study the structure of this organ.
