OBJECTIVES FOR THIS EXERCISE: After completing the laboratory
exercises for the digestive system, you should be able to:
- Identify in the light microscope sections of the oral cavity, esophagus,
stomach, and intestines.
- Identify tonsils in light microscopic sections.
- Identify the tongue in the light microscope.
- Identify each layer in tubular digestive system organs.
- Identify microscopic sections of any organ of the digestive
system.
- Identify oral cavity structures by their appearance in light
microscope.
- Identify salient structural features of the tongue and lip
in mammals, and on a section of lip, identify the
oral cavity side and the integumentary side.
- Identify the various types of lingual papillae and the taste buds on them.
- Identify the parts of a brachydont tooth.
- Identify salivary glands in light microscopic preparations.
- Identify the external muscle of the esophagus including type
of muscle present and its arrangement in various species.
- Identify the various cell types found in the stomach
- Identify the villi and the microvillous border of the intestines.
- Identify the neural elements of the wall of the digestive tract.
- Identify the following junctions in the digestive system: cardiac,
pyloric, anorectal.
- Identify in microscopic sections the compartments of the
ruminant forestomach.
- Identify in microscopic sections the glandular stomach (proventriculus)
and the muscular stomach (gizzard) of birds.
- Identify in microscopic sections both the exocrine and endocrine pancreas.
- Identify the liver and its structural features in microscopic sections.
- Identify the principal cell types in the liver in microscopic
sections.
